Our Story

Top Quality Potatoes

Grown A Top of the World

Our History

Metz Potato Company is a fourth-generation family-owned business. Kenneth William (Bill) and Peggy Metz along with son Greg and wife Jen currently run the family business growing and shipping Top Quality potatoes.

Our families farming roots began in 1917 when Ray and Mabel Metz (Bill’s Grandparents) purchased their first farming ground in the Sargent Community. This is where they built their home which still remains part of the farm today.  Ray and Mable had two children Kenneth Gordon (Bill’s Father) and Mary.  Ray purchased more farmland and expanded the operation raising sheep and farming barley, alfalfa, and potatoes.

In 1939 Ray applied for and was granted the patented trademark “Colorado Top Quality Potatoes, Grown A-Top of the World” which we still use today on Metz Potato Company packaging.

The warehouse packing facility Metz Potato Company was opened in 1944. In 1949, Metz Potato Company became one of the first refrigerated packing facilities in the San Luis Valley, which allowed them to store the potatoes until late spring and early May.

Our farming operation continued to expand under the guidance of their son Kenneth and his wife Virginia. In 1972, Kenneth and Virginia's oldest son and wife (Bill and Peggy) purchased a quarter of the land with the help of uncle Jack Bond, establishing Bond Metz Farms in addition to Metz Potato Company.

Sadly, in 1986 a catastrophic fire affected the warehouse, farming equipment and a portion of the potato crop. However, we were able to recover from this devastation and Bond Metz Farms continues to thrive and has since expanded to produce 240 acres of potatoes and 240 acres of barley each year.

Bill and Peggy’s son Greg along with his wife Jen are continuing the farming tradition by working alongside Bill operating Greg Metz Farms with an additional 1320 acres of farmland making Greg a fourth-generation “grower-shipper” and continuing the Metz Family legacy.

The Metz Potato Company is now managed by Greg and Jen, and packages 850,000 cwt (hundredweight) of potatoes annually. Recently we have expanded our operations by adding new technology and installing six stacking robots in 2021 along with new bagging line in 2022.

Our “Colorado Top Quality Potatoes, Grown A-Top of the World” grown by the Metz Family and other local growers of the San Luis Valley are packaged in a variety of different consumer packs, specialty packs, and cartons to be shipped throughout the United States and Mexico.

We continue to produce Top Quality product by maintaining our Primus GFS Certification. We received our first certification in 2010 with a 98% Superior rating on our food safety audit and have maintained a Superior rating every year since.
